Cowboys Escape the Linc With a Win

The Cowboys came into their matchup with the Eagles on a 3-game winning streak, but they had not faced a tougher test than the Eagles at the Linc. Although the Cowboys scored relatively early, and the defense looked pumped up, the Eagles kept the game close throughout. In fact, the Eagles even took the lead 13-10 for a while. But when the Cowboys needed to come up big, they did. The biggest play coming on a Miles Austin 49-yard touchdown reception, his only catch of the game. Even though the Cowboys did come out of Philly with a hard-earned victory, I think they made it tougher than it had to be.

Dallas Cowboys v Philadelphia Eagles

After a week of Roy Williams complaining about his role in the offense, he had 5 catches for 75 yards, and he looked like he was ready to back up his words. However, even though Williams might be happier because of his involvement in the offense, I think that the offense regressed a little bit in this game. Whether it was the Eagles’ defense, or the extra focus that Romo put on Williams, the Cowboys did not look as sharp as they have in recent weeks. I understand that the Eagles defense is the best that they have played in the last 4 games, but they could have done some more things that they did not do.

The thing that bothered me most about the offense was that when Asante Samuel went down, Romo did not target Austin more. He did have the one big play, but outside of that, he wasn’t given much chance to succeed. He was clearly locked on getting Williams his chances, and I think it hurt Romo a little bit. If this becomes like a TO situation, Romo could start to play a lot worse. Romo needs to just give the ball to the open receiver like he is used to doing when he is successful. If he starts feeling obligated to get one guy the ball, things can become messy. But that is just a little pessimistic foreshadowing. It might just turn out to be nothing.

Another thing that concerned me about the Dallas offense was the trouble they had with the Eagles’ blitz. The Cowboys have faced that Eagles’ blitz plenty of times, and I felt that they should be able to exploit it a little better than they did. I have seen Romo tear that Eagles’ blitz apart, on a Sunday night no less, and I feel that he should be a little more comfortable with it.

All things considered, the Cowboys did escape the Linc with a huge victory and sole possession of the NFC East. They are far from perfect, especially with all of those penalties, but they are winning ball games, and that is what is most important in a short 16 game season. As long as they can continue to grow as they are winning, this team has the chance to click at the right time this season. Maybe they will be in top form come December, and they can finally reach the potential that everybody has expected them to reach for the last few seasons. As of right now, things are looking very good for the Cowboys.
