3-Round Fight Between Eagles and Cowboys?

Because of the Dallas Cowboys’ victory over the Washington Redskins on Sunday night, next week’s matchup between the Eagles and the Cowboys will be for the NFC East crown. Both teams have clinched playoff spots, yet their positioning has not been set in stone. Actually, a strong possibility is that the winner of the game will host the loser in the first round of the playoffs.

If you are an Eagles fan or a Cowboys fan, you cannot ask for anything better. The bitter rivals getting to play each other in back to back weeks would surely be a treat, and the team that comes out of it, and winds up in the second round of the playoffs, will be that much tougher mentally.

Below are the four possible scenarios that the Cowboys and Eagles can encounter if they do indeed play each other 3 times. I also gave explanations as to why I think the team that comes out alive will be that much better because of it.

Here they are:

Cowboys win NFC East but lose to Eagles in playoffs – If the Cowboys were to beat the Eagles in Week 17 at home, and then have the misfortune of losing to the Eagles in the carbon-copy rematch, the Eagles would be flying high going into round two of the playoffs. They will have a lot of confidence, as they would have beaten a team that they lost to twice during the regular season. By beating a team that appeared to have their number, it would give the team a great boost and the proper attitude for the rest of the playoffs. They will feel like they are playing with ”house money,” and a large burden of pressure will be off of them. That could be just the edge they need to make it out of the NFC and into the Super Bowl.

Cowboys win NFC East and beat Eagles in playoffs – If the Cowboys were to sweep the Eagles 3-0, they would feel a great sense of pride and accomplishment. After all, the Eagles are considered to be one of the toughest teams in the entire league. Beating them in all three games would definitely be something that Wade Philips could get his players motivated with. The biggest thing that comes out of it, is that the Cowboys would be winning their first playoff game in over ten years. To realize that you are the group of guys who got the ”monkey off of your backs” gives you all the advantage that you could hope for. Once they just get that first playoff win, the sky is the limit for this team.

Eagles win NFC East but lose to Cowboys in playoffs – If the Cowboys were to lose the season finale, resulting in a road playoff game at the Linc, they might feel down heading into the third game. However, if they come out of the Linc alive with a trip to the second round of the playoffs, they will be on top of the world. Beating the Eagles twice on the road in one season is no small task, and the entire team will be aware of this. Plus, once they know that they can win on the road without a problem, the rest of the playoffs will set up a lot more favorably for them. Just look at the Giants when they were a sixth seed or the Steelers when they were a sixth seed. Once they knew that they had the ability to go on the road and beat anybody, it helped this team bond together and achieve amazing results. Will the Cowboys follow suit?

Eagles win NFC East and beat Cowboys in playoffs – If the Eagles beat the Cowboys in their last two meetings of the season, after falling to Dallas in their first meeting at home, the Eagles will see how much they have grown over the course of the season. In their first meeting with Dallas they were at a 4 (on a scale of 1-10) and now, after their third meeting, they would feel like they are at a 10. For the Eagles to know that they are peaking and at the top of their game at the right time in the season, they will fight THAT much harder to stay up high. Because as everybody knows, the higher you are, the harder you fall. With that as motivation, the Eagles would be so much harder to beat moving forward.
